Bill Belichick has 'jingle in (his) spirit' about rejoining Giants, his ex-player says

Even at 0-1, there's a feeling of demise around the New York Giants that could eventually precipitate an overhaul to the front office and coaching staff.

If the Giants' season turns into another disaster, coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen will likely be fired, ushering in another new era in New York -- one that coaching legend Bill Belichick would like to lead, according to his former player.

"The real enticing one, to me, is if the New York Giants open up," former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman said Tuesday on The Herd. "And I am not calling for anyone's job. I love (Brian) Daboll. Daboll is my favorite. But the fate of what they've put on the field. ... You're going to go down with that ship."

The offensive "ship" is currently led by quarterback Daniel Jones, who completed 22 of 42 passes for 186 yards and two interceptions in the Week 1 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. His success (or lack thereof) will dictate the Giants' success, and the latest sample does not instill a lot of confidence that he will be much better than he's shown over the past few disappointing seasons.

"If that (job) opens up, I remember vividly, anytime we played in New York or played the Giants, you could see the jingle in Belichick's spirit because he loved talking about those old Giants teams," Edelman said. "He loved talking about that organization."

Belichick spent 12 seasons with the Giants during the early portion of his career as an assistant and defensive coordinator and won two Super Bowls.

Edelman would know almost better than anyone Belichick's feelings after spending all 11 of his seasons (2009-2020) under the coaching legend, with whom he won three titles.

For now, though, Belichick will extend his expertise to the broadcast booth with ESPN ("ManningCast") and The CW Network ("Inside the NFL").
