This will be a weekly article series throughout the season looking back on what happened for the Seattle Seahawks 40, 30, 20, and 10 years ago this week.
The games this week start out a little rough with the 1984 team falling short but then we've got three straight wins including one over young Jeff Fisher and one over the San Francisco 49ers!
Game Log
In the days before the NFL expanded to be a nearly year-round entity, the final games of the regular season were played halfway through December as opposed to early January like today. And the Seahawks last game in 1984 was a doozy with a home matchup against the Denver Broncos that would crown the AFC West Champion. Both teams were 12-3 heading into the winner-take-all game. While even the loser would make the playoffs, the difference would be that the winner would have a higher seed and avoid playing in the wild card round.
Since we can all see the graphic above, it's not a secret that the game did not go Seattle's way. They never held a lead and trailed by 21 in the 3rd Quarter after a 40-yard INT return TD by Denver's Steve Foley. The most disappointing thing about this game is the fact that they held John Elway to just 148 yards and picked him off 4 times yet still lost the game pretty handily.
Dave Krieg was 30/50 for 334 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT. David Hughes had 8 carries for 38 yards. Steve Largent had 7 carries for 96 yards. Dan Doornink and Charle Young had the two Seattle receiving TDs.
Keith Simpson had 2 INT while Kenny Easley and John Harris each had 1 INT.
Seattle finished the 1984 regular season at 12-4 and headed to the playoffs as the #4 seed wild card. They would host the other wild card, the #5 seed Los Angeles Raiders in the first round of the playoffs, which we'll get to next week.

I still get tickled every time I see the Houston Oilers logo. They need to come back full time, somehow. And look, it's a Jeff Fisher sighting! Fischer, Houston's defensive coordinator, took over as head coach a few weeks earlier in the season when Jack Pardee was fired. He ended up finishing with a 1-5 record in 1994 but then rattled off a 7-9 followed by 3 consecutive 8-8 seasons to get that reputation going!
Dan McGwire was 8/17 for 95 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT. Chris Warren had a huge day with 30 carries for 185 yards and 1 TD. Mack Strong chipped in 44 yards and 1 TD on 10 carries. Steve Smith had 2 catches for 32 yards.
Seattle's defense sacked Billy Joe Tolliver 6 times! Cortez Kennedy had 2.0 sacks. Sam Adams and Bob
Spitulski had 1.0 sack each. Michael McCrary, Michael Sinclair, Rod Stephens, and Terry Wooden all had 0.5 sack a piece.

This game against the Minnesota Vikings was a back-and-forth affair for the most part with the Seahawks pulling away late with 2 4th Quarter Josh Brown FGs. Since we're talking about kickers, Minnesota trotted out Morten Andersen and the ripe, old age of 44. He wouldn't play in 2005 but suited up for the Falcons in 2006-2007!
Matt Hasselbeck was 23/34 for 334 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT. Shaun Alexander had 27 carries for 112 yards with an additional 12 yards and 1 TD receiving. Darrell Jackson had 10 catches for 135 yards and 1 TD. Bobby Engram added 79 yards and 1 TD.
Terreal Bierria and Ken Hamlin both had 1 INT. Grant Wistrom, Rashad Moore, and Chike Okeafor each had 1.0 sack.
Michael Boulware was the story of the day on defense with 8 tackles, 1.0 sack, and 1 INT.

Gotta love a win against the San Francisco 49ers no matter how ugly! Seattle trailed 7-3 at halftime before scoring 2 TDs in about 5 minutes between the end of the 3rd Quarter and beginning of the 4th Quarter. Their defense held on for the win and mathematically eliminated the 49ers from postseason contention. This would end up being Jim Harbaugh's final year as 49ers head coach before he went to Michigan.
Russell Wilson was 12/24 for 168 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. Marshawn Lynch had 21 carries for 91 yards and 1 TD. Jermaine Kearse was the leading receiver with 5 catches for 78 yards while Paul Richardson hauled in the lone receiving TD.
The Seahawks defense sacked Colin Kaepernick six times! Jordan Hill led the way with 2.0 sacks. Bobby Wagner, Bruce Irvin, K.J. Wright, and Seahawks Legend Kevin Williams each had 1.0 sack.
