The Midland County Sheriff's Office has issued an alert for residents of Midland County for ongoing phone scams where callers impersonate local law enforcement officers.
According to the Sheriff's Office, these phone scammers demand money while often claiming to be law enforcement.
"There are multiple variations of the scam, but the callers always identify themselves as law enforcement and demand payment in the form of gift cards, credit/debit cards or money apps for things such as a missed court date, a missed subpoena, an active warrant, etc," the Sheriff's Office said in a press release.
Additionally, these callers may even spoof or imitate the agency's phone number when calling so that it appears the phone call is coming from the law enforcement agency.
"No law enforcement officer will ever call and demand money over the telephone in lieu of an arrest," said the Sheriff's Office.
Residents are urged not to be intimidated by phone scammers. It is also imperative that Midland County residents not give out any personal details over the phone.
If residents have any doubts, they are encouraged to hang up and call the agency directly. Be sure and use a phone number that is an official publicized phone number or go to the agency directly in person with concerns.
