Sherwin-Williams just announced its Color of the Year - but with a twist. The company revealed its first Color Capsule of the Year, which has nine different shades.
"The one common theme that ties the Color Capsule of the Year together is vintage with a twist, says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. "The capsule feels very eclectic and reminiscent of the 1970s, which is making a comeback in home and design, but we added a few modern shades to keep it feeling fresh and fun," she tells me.
In addition, Wadden says the capsule is unexpected, and this fresh approach features an entire capsule collection rather than focusing on a single color as Sherwin-Williams normally does every year.
"One of my favorite things about the capsule is that there is something for everyone - it showcases a diverse range of shades, including eclectic, classic, feminine, warm, and cool tones, but still feels balanced."
Wadden walked me through the 9 colors in the Color Capsule of the Year.
A cinnamon-dusted golden hue, Wadden says Bosc Pear SW 6390 invokes luxe organic tones reminiscent of bygone eras. "For homeowners looking for a shade to add into an accent wall, I recommend it as a very sophisticated gold/yellow tone that provides boldness in the most anchoring way."
Versatile enough to be used as a wall color or accent hue, Wadden says Mauve Finery SW 6282 adds a refreshing, botanical vibe. "It's a great choice to add in a room where you want a unique colorful yet soft look, but it looks especially well in bathrooms given this color's soothing characteristics, to create a spa-like environment."
"Bordering on black, Clove SW 9605 is a welcoming brown that comforts and soothes," Wadden says, noting that she loves the idea of painting all four walls in this dark shade. "Even though it is a dark and bold color, it provides the perfect balance between elegance and comfort."
Calming and versatile, Wadden says Grounded SW 6089 is a captivating brown that provides a refined earthen tone.
"Somewhere between warm and cool, Sunbleached SW 9585 is a light neutral that work well with practically any design," Wadden explains.
"A vibrant yellow green, Chartreuse SW 0073 is versatile enough to be eclectic, and bright, as well as a joyful color that's both historical and relevant," Wadden says.
"The brilliantly bright light reflectance value (90) of White Snow SW 9541 is beautiful and pure," Wadden says, noting that it's a favorite among design professionals who want to create a light and airy result.
Both rustic and refined, Wadden says Rain Cloud SW 9639 is a stormy and deep gray-blue hue that combines classic and contemporary design.
"Soft and inviting, Malabar SW 9110 is a sandy beige neutral that works well when layering with other warm hues." Wadden says.
Wadden tells me that one of her favorite color pairings in the capsule is combining the browns with the whites, like Grounded and Sunbleached to create a combination that feels elegant, yet restorative.
Another pairing she loves is Rain Cloud and Chartreuse. "This combination might seem weird since we don't usually mix blue and yellow together, but these two colors give a space a really fresh, light and bright feel," she says.
