Fire engulfs garage at Andover home

ANDOVER -- A quick response by Andover Fire Rescue to fight a garage fire at the residence of 104 Greenwood Road stopped the home from being destroyed Tuesday evening.

At 6:21 p.m., Andover Fire Rescue and police dispatch received multiple calls about the garage fire in the area of Greenwood and High Plain Road. Deputy fire Chief Michael Oteri said the calls came from the homeowner and neighbors.

When the first engine arrived five minutes later, the two-story, split level home's attached garage fully was engulfed in flames.

Oteri said the flames appeared to be going up the side of the garage and heading up to the roof.

The homeowner told firefighters no one was in the home. Crews conducted a sweep of the house and garage to confirm no other residents or pets were inside.

The first engine was able to quickly establish a water line as Lt. John Gangi pointed out a nearby hydrant across the street. Oteri said finding the hydrant fast allowed crews to keep a lot of water on the flames and aggressively attack the fire from outside.

Within a couple minutes, the fire was knocked down. Oteri said the quick response by Andover firefighters prevented the home from being destroyed as flames were stopped before they could breach the home's main walls.

"Another minute or two and it would have been a different story," Oteri said.

No firefighters or residents were injured, Andover Fire reported.

A cause for the fire has not been determined. Fire investigators remained on scene late last night. The fire is under investigation by Andover Fire and the state fire marshal.

Andover Police Department, Lawrence General Hospital EMS and Rehab five assisted on scene.

Mutual aid from the fire departments of North Andover, Lawrence, Tewksbury and Wilmington provided station coverage during the fire.
