BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating a fatal car crash that has resulted in two deaths and hospitalized another, a 2-year-old child.
The BPD reported officers said they were involved in a traffic collision at the intersection of Niles Street and Kern Street on the morning of October 13, 2024, around 5:40 a.m.
Witnesses reported that a patrol car was driving westbound on Niles when a vehicle driving northbound crashed into the patrol car after failing to stop for the stop sign at the intersection.
The driver of the other vehicle was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The front passenger, a woman, was hospitalized at a local hospital, where she later died. A 2-year-old child in the vehicle was also hospitalized, with life-threatening injuries.
The officers in the patrol car were hospitalized with minor to moderate injuries.
Drugs and alcohol could have been a factor in the crash; toxicology reports will confirm whether they were.
The Kern County Coroner's Office will release the identities of the deceased at a later date.
