Montgomery PTA members react to superintendent's resignation

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - A day after the Montgomery County Board of Education approved the superintendent's resignation, local Parent Teacher Association members shared their perspectives on the matter.

Beverly Williams is president of the Montgomery County PTA and secretary of JAG High School's PTA while also teaching English at JAG. She says students deserve a school system that's focused on their futures.

"This is not a time to bicker and become divided, but this is a great opportunity for us to rally together and move forward," Williams said. "Our children are watching us. They're watching the posts that we make. They're listening to the comments that we make, and so they're paying attention and they're taking notes and they're going to follow suit."

Other PTA members like Seth Johnson's Alnita Pettiway say it's also important to recognize the apparent strained relationship between school board members and the superintendent that some perceive led to Melvin Brown's resignation.

"I really think they need to sweep around their own front door before they go attacking other people because everybody does not do everything the same way," said Pettiway. "Sometimes you got to bring on changes."

After the meeting in which Brown's resignation was approved, board President Brenda DeRamus Coleman acknowledged members don't always see eye to eye but promised to move forward in the best interest of the students.

"We as a board, and many of us have even talked since we have adjourned, we are ready to come together, make certain that we make the decisions that are good and positive for this district," she said.

If you want to play a part in steering MPS' future, you are encouraged to do that by joining your local PTA. If your school does not have an active PTA, Williams says to contact a Montgomery County PTA member for assistance. She says the requirements for a charter is a $10 fee and 25 members.
