School Resource Officer uses tourniquet to save teen's life after school bus altercation

OKLAHOMA COUNTY, OKLA. (KOKH) -- Bullying on a school bus turned into a bloody incident requiring emergency surgery.

However, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) said it could have ended worse.

Working 11 years as a school resource officer (SRO), Deputy Jonathan Jones never had to use atourniquet to save a student's life.

On Friday, Sept. 13, a 17-year-old punched out the window of a school bus, cutting the artery in his right arm.

Thankfully SRO Deputy Jonathan Jones responded quickly.

"I knew exactly what to do", Deputy Jones said. "I knew I had to get a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and stop the dying."

Jones called for help, seeing how much blood the teen was losing.

The OCSO said that the tourniquet and Jones' quick thinking saved the teen, showing the importance of school resource officers.

"That's why we love the SRO program," Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III said. "That one day that you might need them, they show up and respond accordingly. That is, that is powerful.

According to the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, the 17-year-old's sister attends Rogers Middle School, where the incident happened.

His sister had previously fought on the school bus, getting kicked off.

OCSO said their mom was dropping the sister off when the older brother tried to confront the other student and punched the window.

The teen is facing charges for making threats of violence and destroying school property.

He was rushed into emergency surgery after losing so much blood and is expected to keep his arm.

Deputy Jones helped treat the teen, called for backup, and responded to a fight inside the school related to the incident.

OCSO said that's why training and the tools they use are so important.

In an emergency, anyone can use this on someone else or themselves.

You wrap it around your arm as tightly as possible until you can get emergency care.
