Saturday's prep highlights: Wells, Claybrooke area's highest state golf finishers

After a rough first day at state, Mahomet-Seymour's Reis Claybrooke bounced back with a 1-under-par round of 70 to rise up the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 16th to end his high school career. Monticello's Maddux Quick shot a 78 to tie for 27th overall, and Prairie Central's Easton Friedman's 81 placed him in a tie for 47th.

LeRoy's Brycen Umstattd finished his final round of the season with an 82 to tie for 30th. Fisher's Ethan McFarling had a tough day, carding a 92 to drop down to 71st in the standings.

In girls' golf

Class 1A state tournament at Red Tail Run Golf Course

St. Thomas More's Ashley Wells shot a 4-over-par 76 to end her high school career with a 14th-place finish. Sullivan's Shae Ellis was a few spots behind tied for 21st after shooting an 84. Hoopeston Area's Taylor Page struggled with a 104 to finish tied for 75th.

A pair of goals and an assist from pushed the Buffaloes (7-9) past the Blue Devils (11-8-1) and into the championship. scored the team's third goal, and came away with 13 saves.

O/SF (21-3) was only able to find the back of the net once, courtesy of , but that's all it needed to advance to the championship over the host Cornjerkers (8-17). Goalie had three saves to earn the shutout. It was O/SF's 21st win of the season, setting a new program single-season record.

Class 1A St. Anne Regional

A big offensive output moved the Warriors (17-4-1) on to the title match. 's two goals led the charge, and , , and each added one. Solorzano tallied three assists, and Tobar had one. saved four shots in net.

Mahomet-Seymour and Danville tied atop the 11-team standings, but the Bulldogs won the tiebreaker by qualifying more girls to state, so they won a second consecutive sectional title. finished fourth in singles play to advance to state. M-S' doubles teams of and (second) as well as and (third) punched their tickets. As they have all year, Danville's and won the doubles competition and are now 31-2 as a tandem this season. Teammate will join them at state after finishing third in singles play.

In football

Six total touchdowns were scored in this back-and-forth battle, and the difference was a single successful two-point conversion by the Sabers (6-2) in the fourth quarter. completed 13 of 19 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. rushed 22 times for 80 yards and a score. reeled in 10 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown, and added 60 receiving yards and a score on two catches.

Fisher (9-22) won all three of its matches to claim the title. made the All-Tournament Team, racking up 23 kills and 15 digs through the first two matches.

Morgan Lee Buerkett Invite

Behind co-MVP performances by (49 kills, 31 digs) and (97 assists), St. Thomas More (30-4) won its 12th-annual tournament. With STM's win over Teutopolis, coach earned his 400th career victory. Cissna Park (27-3) finished third thanks to 's 46 kills and 's 35 kills and 12 aces. LeRoy (18-9) took eighth, with making the All-Tournament Team. Monticello (17-12) placed ninth, with 's 39 kills, 's 42 digs and 's 56 assists leading the way.

Vermilion County Tournament

The Blue Devils (16-5) pulled out a 25-17, 25-18 win over the Cornjerkers (7-19). had two blocks, and had three aces for Hoopeston Area.

The Blue Devils (17-5) faced a test from the Storm (14-8) but were able to pull out the 22-25, 25-23, 15-4 victory.

In their second straight three-set match, the Blue Devils (18-5) got the best of the Buffaloes (12-10) 22-25, 25-11, 15-11.

The Buffaloes (13-10) earned a comeback win over the Cornjerkers (7-19) 18-25, 25-15, 15-8. Leading Hoopeston Area were , and with a combined 16 kills.

The Buffaloes (14-10) snagged their second win of the day 26-24, 25-21 over the Storm (14-9). tallied 18 kills on the day for G-RF, put up 57 assists and had 28 digs.

The Cornjerkers (8-19) ended pool play on a positive note with a 26-24, 25-16 win over the Storm (14-10). tallied five kills and five aces to pace the winning effort, and and combined for another 11 kills.

The Comets (7-15) got their county tourney off to a good start with a 16-25, 25-23, 15-13 win over the Trojans (14-13-1). 's double-double of 18 assists and 11 digs led the way. and each tallied 15 digs and combined for nine kills. had six kills and nine digs, and added five kills, three blocks and two aces.

The Tigers (28-2) took care of business over the Comets (7-16) 25-9, 25-10. Despite the loss, dug out seven balls, and had six assists for Oakwood.

The Tigers (29-2) had no problem with the Trojans (7-16), earning a 25-19, 25-17 victory.

In boys' cross-country

is a Big 12 Conference champion. The Champaign Central junior ran a time of 14 minutes, 49.7 seconds at Detweiller Park to lead the Maroons to a fourth-place team finish. Teammate wasn't too far behind in 16th (16:22.8). Urbana took fifth place as a team, led by in eighth (15:56.6) and in 13th (16:14.0). Danville placed seventh, and Centennial was ninth.

In girls' cross-country

With her third-place individual time of 18 minutes, 24.2 seconds, led Centennial to a third-place team finish at the Big 12 Conference championships. Following her were in 12th (19:28.7) and (19:42.4). Champaign Central placed fifth as a team, paced by in 18th (19:53.3) and in 20th (20:00.7). (13th, 19:28.9) and (14th, 19:38.0) stood out for seventh-place Urbana.
