WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Thanks to the efforts of several organizations, one area of the New Hanover County landfill will soon look greener.
The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees partnered with UNCW's Plastic Ocean Project (POP)to plant 75 oak trees next to a pond at the landfill.
The trees were planted in an area of the landfill that will be called the Fearless Forest.
Plastic Ocean Project began planting trees at the landfill in 2019 with more to 2,000 having already been planted since then.
Katrina Rusinovich and Sam Paul are sophomores at UNCW who intern at POP.
They said it was great seeing so many volunteers out helping the environment.
"Oh, I think its great," Rusinovich said. "It's really important that people are aware that are some issues like pollution and trash and I love that people are out here taking their time out of their day to do something good for the world."
I mean, it warms my heart because I do a lot of like college events that we do for cleanups and its nice to see the whole community get together," Paul said.
Audi Cape Fear also helped out by donating $100 toward purchasing trees for every Audi sold in the last two months.
A second planting is expected to be held in January.
