The television host revealed that her breast cancer has metastasized in a CNN roundtable discussion with her best friend, journalist Stephanie Elam, and CNN anchor Sara Sidner.
Lewis, 51, initially announced her diagnosis of stage III breast cancer in 2020, citing her fear of radiation exposure as a reason for reusing mammograms for years. She called this decision a "mistake" in the post.
The former video jockey said she chose not to get a double mastectomy after receiving her diagnosis because she didn't want excessive toxins in her body.
"I decided to keep my tumor and try to work it out of my body a different way," Lewis said in the sit-down. "Looking back on that, I go, 'You know what? Maybe I should have.'"
Lewis pursued holistic methods, rest and diet as well as radiation and medicine. After some initial improvement, the cancer ultimately spread last year, Elam said in a voice-over narration.
"My lymph system really flared up," Lewis said. "It was the first time I ever had a conversation with death because I felt like: This is how it is."
"I was just like, 'Fudge man, I really thought I had this.' I was frustrated, I was a little angry at myself, and I said, 'Man, listen. I know you're coming for me at some point. But I don't want it to be now. And if you could just wait, I promise when you do come, I'm gonna make it fun for you,'" Lewis said.
Lewis was a video jockey and host on MTV from the late '90s until 2001 when she left MTV to host her own talk show "The Ananda Lewis Show." She worked as a correspondent for "The Insider" from 2004 to 2005 before becoming a carpenter and hosting the 2019 revival of "While You Were Out" on TLC.
She has a son, Langston, with her husband Harry Smith, brother of Will Smith.
