HOUSTON (KIAH) -- A drunk driver took the life of Yolanda Carson's daughter.
Jade Jiles, 23, had just become a mother herself before she was hit by a car and killed outside of a friend's house in north Texas on March 30, 2013.
She left behind her 6-month-old son Jacob, along with a mother who's still grieving 11 years later.
"She was my first-born child," Carson said. "She was my baby. She was always mommy's friend -- always there for me. And we were bonding over Jacob, because I was a new grandmother. So, we were very, very close. Right now, I'm missing that."
Grief for many people is magnified during the holiday season, and so are the number of drunk driving crashes and deaths.
Between Thanksgiving and the end of New Years in 2023, the Texas Department of Transportation says 272 Texans were seriously hurt by drunk drivers and 126 were killed.
It's why TxDOT launches its "Drive Sober, No Regrets" anti-drunk driving campaign around this time every year.
This year it features Carson who has a message for the man who killed her daughter.
"He could have taken an Uber -- taken a Lyft," she said. "There's so many other opportunities that he could have gotten home."
TxDOT says if all drivers got a safe ride home instead of driving after drinking it would save lives and prevent tragedies like Jiles's death that left little Jacob without a mother.
"That breaks my heart that he will never see his mom," Carson said. "We talk about her, but he will never have a hug from her. He will never see her smile. And he will never get the chance to hold her hand like so many other kids do with their parents because of this drunk driver, because of the senseless act that he did that night."
