As much as the New York Jets wanted things to work out with Mike Williams, the simple fact is that it never happened.
Williams recorded just 12 catches and did not tally a touchdown in his seven games with Aaron Rodgers and the Jets offense. With the former Los Angeles Charger now traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, he could have easily left by trashing the organization.
That's what many other failed free agents have done.
That's not what the former first-round pick did, though. Williams, in his introductory press conference with the Steelers, was open about the reason why things didn't work out in New York.
"Going there after the ACL not having OTAs or training camp to get the chemistry right ... [Rodgers] is real detailed. He likes what he likes. Me not being able to transition in as quick is probably what went wrong," Williams said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
It's an incredibly fair and honest assessment from a player who by all accounts was well-liked in the Jets locker room.
New York knew that they would need to be patient with Williams coming off a grueling ACL injury last season with Los Angeles. The fact that he didn't have OTAs or much of a training camp played a key role in that as well.

With the Jets struggling out of the gate, the time for patience was running out.
And it's specifically why the organization decided to move on from Williams after just seven games. And why the receiver is more than comfortable in his new environment now.
