College football guarantee games pay millions to small-budget schools but opportunities could shrink

Guarantee games are a staple of the college football season. That is when one school pays another to come to its stadium, with no return date. More often than not, the games are not competitive. Occasionally, the smaller program gets to take home a historic victory along with a big check. Northern Illinois got $1.4 million along with an upset at Notre Dame, for example. But with schools facing the prospect of paying their athletes and millions in antitrust damages, the future of the kinds of games is uncertain.

Juventus 19-year-old Yildiz breaks Del Piero's record with 1st goal of revamped Champions League

TURIN, Italy (AP) -- Juventus 19-year-old Kenan Yildiz has scored the first goal of the revamped Champions League. And what a goal it was. Yildiz dribbled into the left side of the box and curled in a long shot off the far top corner of the goal frame to become Juventus' youngest scorer in Europe's top club competition. At 19 years and 136 days, Yildiz broke the club record that Alessandro Del Piero established when he scored at 20 years and 308 days against Borussia Dortmund in September 1995. It was fitting that the Turkey winger was wearing the same No. 10 that Del Piero wore for Juventus. Juventus was playing PSV Eindhoven.

Man City's Rodri says top soccer players close to going on strike because there are too many games

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Manchester City midfielder Rodri says top soccer players are close to going on strike because of the number of games they are having to play. The Spain international says players are concerned about the way the game is headed as more games are added to the calendar in competitions like the Champions League, which starts on Tuesday. Rodri was asked if players might start refusing to play because of the calendar. He says "I think we are close to that." He adds that is "a general opinion of the players" and "it's something that worries us."

Steelers sticking with Justin Fields at QB while Russell Wilson rehabs calf injury

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Justin Fields will likely make his third straight start at quarterback when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Mike Tomlin says that Fields will practice with the starters during the early portion of the week while Russell Wilson continues to rehab from a calf injury he aggravated a few days ahead of the season opener earlier this month. Tomlin praised Fields for his decision-making and his demeanor but stopped short of saying Fields would be the full-time starter whenever Wilson is cleared to play.

A man accused of stalking UConn star Paige Bueckers is found with an engagement ring near airport

Police reports say a man charged with stalking UConn basketball star Paige Bueckers was found with an engagement ring and lingerie when he was arrested near a Connecticut airport. Authorities say Robert Cole Parmalee posted statements on TikTok saying he loved Bueckers and wanted to marry her. Police also say some of Parmalee's social media posts and emails to UConn officials included threatening comments. He was detained on $100,000 bail after being arraigned Monday at a courthouse in Rockville, Connecticut, on charges of stalking, harassment and breach of peace. His lawyer did not immediately return a message.

Panthers QB carousel keeps on spinning as 36-year-old Andy Dalton gets set to start vs. Raiders

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers had hoped that Bryce Young would put an end to their ever-churning quarterback carousel when they selected him No. 1 overall last year. But two games into his second season, Young has been benched and the Panthers are back to another journeyman quarterback. The 36-year-old Andy Dalton will take over the offense on Sunday when the Panthers (0-2) visit the Las Vegas Raiders. The Panthers have struggled with quarterback stability since 2018, starting 10 different quarterbacks. Dalton started one game for Carolina last season, throwing for 361 yards and two scores in a loss to Seattle.

Solheim Cup victory illustrates promising future for American stars on LPGA: Analysis

Three of America's best players on the LPGA delivered on the biggest stage at the Solheim Cup. Nelly Korda managed what Tiger Woods never could by performing like the No. 1 player against Europe in a high-stakes team competition. Rose Zhang needed only 58 holes to win all four of her matches. And Lilia Vu delivered one clutch moment after another to push the Americans over the top. This doesn't mean the Americans now have the upper hand in the Solheim Cup. But the Solheim Cup showcased three star players in their 20s that could bring the LPGA more attention.

Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase breaking bats, records, making strong case to win AL Cy Young

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Emmanuel Clase is breaking bats and records at an almost equal pace. Cleveland's closer with a devilish cut fastball not seen since Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera's dominant days with the New York Yankees is having a season to remember. Maybe one that includes winning the Cy Young, a rarity for relievers. On Monday night, Clase earned his MLB-leading 46th save and his 33rd straight since May 20 to tie José Mesa's single-season team record. No AL reliever has won the Cy Young since 1992. But Clase's ERA and dominance all season has pushed him into the conversation for consideration.
