LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - It was in 1998 that the Larry Combest Community Health and Wellness Center opened at 40th and Ave. A.
Today, in partnership with the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, another location opened in possibly a more convenient location - inside the YWCA at 65th St. and University Ave.
Linda McMurry, the executive director of the Combest Center, said twice as many patients can be served due to the size of the new center.
"It's in the heart of things in a medically underserved area but being inside the YWCA, there's many opportunities for other organizations," she said.
The new location, called the Combest Central Community Health Center, serves as a center for primary, prenatal, behavioral healthcare and diabetes education while also having a program for senior house calls.
It offers prescription assistance, transportation for patients and immunizations. And for new mothers, The Nest will serve as a program with physicians, nurse practitioners, and midwives available.
Another important aspect is the connection to hundreds of students in the school of nursing and the medical school.
"It's a wonderful mission for the clinic and the school. We are here for these people because we receive so many great things from the community and this is our serving back," Holly Wei, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing dean, said.
