PFF's highest-graded Eagles: tackle Lane Johnson played above average

PFF's highest-graded Eagles: tackle Lane Johnson played above average

When Pro Football Focus came out with its Week 1 grades for offensive lineman, the entire Philadelphia Eagles offensive line fared well, with right tackle Lane Johnson topping that list.

The 12-year veteran and former first-round pick out of Oklahoma led the way in overall blocking grades for Philadelphia, which beat Green Bay 34-29 in last Friday's season-opener for both teams, with a grade of 84.8. More importantly, he was graded at 89.6 in run-blocking, which has been the less effective part of his game in recent seasons.

That run-blocking number ranked ninth overall in games played through Sunday and fifth overall for tackles. That was just the kind of performance Lane and his linemates were hoping to provide for newly acquired running back Saquon Barkley, who debuted with 109 rushing yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns.

Johnson also showed the stamina he has become known for in recent seasons. He was on the field for all 76 of the Eagles' offensive plays, as were the rest of the offensive line.

Four of the five offensive linemen graded out at 73.8 or better on Friday night, with left tackle Jordan Mailata just behind Johnson at 80.0.

The lowest blocking grade was given to center Cam Jurgens, but his score of 68.7 was the second best among all centers through Sunday's games.

Speaking of blocking, wide receivers DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown graded out just below Johnson due in part to high marks for their downfield run blocking.

Here were the five highest-graded Eagles on offense overall:

Against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday, Johnson and his linemates will be working against a defensive unit that allowed just 270 yards and no touchdowns in an 18-10 loss to Pittsburgh, in game where the Steelers got six field goals from kicker Chris Boswell.
