Metro Detroit TSA inspector saves 2 lives with organ donation

ROMULUS, Mich. - Lindsay Umphrey knew two things: she wanted to work for the Transportation Security Administration.

Later in life, she realized she wanted to be an organ donor.

The TSA inspector knows how to protect fliers coming through Detroit Metro Airport. But what she didn't know is that same selfless act would benefit two families who had nothing to do with the tarmac.

"In 2020, I found out that my cousin was going to be placed on the kidney transplant list," she said.

While on the list, Umphrey's cousin would need to undergo dialysis for 12 hours every day.

After spending time with him and his family upon relocating back to Michigan, the mother of two wanted to see if she might be a match.

In 2022, she did her first round of donor testing however the team rejected her candidacy citing health and wellness concerns.

"It was really disappointing at first because I thought it was the end of my journey," Umphrey said.

The TSA inspector tried again.

She passed the health screen during the second round of testing, though she wasn't a direct match.

Then, she learned about the Kidney Paired Donation Program at the University of Michigan.

Essentially, she would donate a kidney to a stranger for a better match while her cousin received a kidney from another donor.

In 2023, the donors and recipients underwent successful surgeries.

"It means everything," Umphrey said. "Honestly, that's what I did it for, and it's actually beyond what I could've ever imagined."

Now, she's advocating for others to consider whether being an organ donor may be for them.

It's not a decision for everyone, but more awareness could lead to more donors, she said.

"They're living now. They get a second chance of life," Umphrey said. "I guess helped two people in one day which is great."
