Goldsboro woman killed, 3 others hurt after wrong-way BMW crashes into their SUV near Clayton; car driver flees, troopers say

CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) -- A Goldsboro woman was killed and three others were seriously injured when a wrong-way driver collided with their SUV and then fled on foot early Sunday along U.S. 70 bypass near Clayton, officials said.

The hit-and-run crash happened just after 3 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 bypass near mile marker 319, which is Cornwallis Road, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The wrong way driver was going west in the eastbound lanes in a white BMW, which caught fire after the wreck. That driver, a man, ran from the scene and managed to evade searches that included K-9 units, troopers said.

A white Jeep Cherokee was heading east in the eastbound lanes with four Goldsboro occupants, including a small child, the highway patrol said.

Kortney Summer Atkins, 24, a passenger in the Jeep, died on the way to WakeMed, troopers said.

A woman who was driving, along with a 4-year-old child and their father were all taken to WakeMed with serious injuries.

Multiple calls were made to Raleigh dispatch about the wrong-way BMW before the collision, according to the highway patrol. Troopers said they tried to find the driver before the crash.

This is the second high-profile deadly wrong-way crash this month -- after four people died in a wreck 10 days ago along U.S. 301 near Mobley Road in Wilson County.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office assisted in the search with a K-9 unit involved.

Troopers said anyone with information about the wrecks should contact the N.C. State Highway Patrol Johnston County division at 919-934-2186 or 919-733-3861.
