GAYLORD, MI - Temperatures spiraled well below zero across Michigan this morning, and some areas saw numbers plunge to levels of record-breaking cold.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord said the daily cold temperature record in that city was broken at 5:24 a.m. today when the pre-dawn temps hit -21 degrees.

"The previous record of -10 for December 22nd has been standing since 1989. Meanwhile, the remainder of Northern Michigan wasn't much warmer as the majority of the region dropped well below 0," NWS meteorologists said.

In other areas across Northern Michigan, the Army Airfield in Grayling recorded -17 degrees, Burt Lake dropped to 5 below zero and Petoskey hit -9.

Farther south in West Michigan, the cold also smacked some areas. Leota in Clare County recorded -17 degrees, Reed City dropped to -3, while Rockford, Ada and Caledonia all hit 5 degrees above zero.
