The Washington Commanders have passed most tests this NFL season, but their next one will tell us a lot about the direction the franchise is heading.
With Jayden Daniels and the offense putting up points for fun, Kliff Kingsbury's unit will come up against one of the best defenses in football, with the Pittsburgh Steelers up next.
The Commanders rank third for scoring (29.3), while the Steelers are ranked second for points allowed (14.9). Plus, Pittsburgh has only allowed 100 rushing yards three times this season, and only one team has passed for over 269 yards against them, the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5.
For Kingsbury, he knows the challenges that await his offense.
"They're really good," Kingsbury said. "Teryl Austin's [defensive coordinator] done a tremendous job. Mike T [Mike Tomlin], the culture he has there, they're very physical, great personnel, play downhill, take the ball away. So it'll be a huge test, I think making sure we avoid negative plays and turnovers is going to be the key to keeping it a ball game and being able to stay in it."
Through nine weeks, the Commanders' offense has only three turnovers as Daniels has done a great job at protecting the football, but he comes up against a Steelers defense that thrives on getting quarterbacks to make mistakes.
In eight games, the Steelers have forced multiple turnovers in six of them, including their last four games. So Daniels will need to be very careful not to allow Pittsburgh to add to its growing turnover tally. Plus, it is hard to consistently move the ball against Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh ranks 11th for third-down conversions, allowing one just 34 percent of the time.
