Apple scraps plans for iPhone subscription program - Phandroid

Last year, there was a report that Apple could be considering launching an iPhone subscription program. For those who were questioning whether or not this was necessary, it seems that Apple has decided it wasn't. According to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, those plans have been scrapped.

For those unfamiliar, the report from last year suggested that Apple might want to launch a subscription program for the iPhone. This would effectively allow users to upgrade their iPhones every year as long as they paid the monthly subscription fees. In a way, it would be like you're renting the iPhone instead of actually owning it.

It was unclear how much this subscription would have cost. As wild as it might sound, we can't say we're too surprised. Subscriptions do make up quite a bit of Apple's revenue. It's also sustainable as it ensures a certain amount of money every month. This is why we weren't exactly shocked that Apple could have considered such a plan.

That being said, unless you have need for a new iPhone every year, this plan doesn't really make sense. That is, unless it was priced very cheaply. Either way, it looks like those plans are effectively a no-go, so we don't have to think about it anymore.
