Community and vendors celebrate the outdoors at Tehachapi's yearly apple extravaganza

BAKERSFIELD, Calif KBAK/KBFX -- Many made the drive up to Tehachapi this weekend for the annual Tehachapi Apple Festival. The yearly festival welcomed the community to enjoy two days of fun in the outdoors.

Drawing in over a thousand, the community lined the streets of Tehachapi to continue the tradition of the annual Apple Festival.

"People love apples," said Kelco Creek Farms' Antonette Watson. "I mean, that's just part of Kern County, and being an agricultural area, everybody loves apples."

The weekend long event took over Downtown Tehachapi with vendors getting creative to sell their apple themed products.

"We started out with 600 apples, and we may have 20 left," said Crow Custom Cookies Co, Donna Crow. "Production has been hard, but it paid off. Because the Tehachapi community is amazing every time, we've been here for as long as they've started. The very first one, we've been here, about 10 years, but it's always the best event ever."

"First time being here, it's been wonderful," said Bakersfield vendor, Lee Osthimer. "Love the weather here. We made some things, I make is out of wood, repurposed wood, old fence wood, what I find on the side of the road, but I just like to repurpose and just make things that we had to have a theme. We made some and have a few apple things in there."

Even the little ones got to participate as games and prize opportunities were available.

"There's this scavenger hunt," said Apple Scavenger, Izaias Taylor. "There you got to get 12 signatures and find the apples. And then when you do that, there's a certain place you could go to get a prize."

For Antonette Watson, production was small due to the excessive heat during the summertime.

"I have four apple trees," explained Watson. "I have four peach trees. I have blackberries, strawberries. It affected everything. The production was down. It was hard to keep enough water to all of it. So, it has hurt the apple production here and where I'm at all of Kern County, I think everyone has hurt from it."

But even with one tree producing, she was nearly out by the time we visited her stand.

"I've almost sold out, and that feels really good," said Watson. "I will worry about next year and have to get more challenging on that."

Vendors, food, live music, and of course apples. The yearly Tehachapi Apple Festival delivered another a smashing good time.
