Now You Can Talk to ChatGPT on WhatsApp: OpenAI Launches Free AI Access

OpenAI has introduced an experimental service, 1-800-ChatGPT, which brings the popular chatbot to WhatsApp, aiming to make AI more accessible without needing a separate account or app. Notably, Meta already offers Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp.

Users in the US and Canada can call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to interact directly with the AI, while WhatsApp users in supported countries can message the same number for text-based chats. It is not yet available in India. Notably, users must initiate the conversation as ChatGPT does not start communication.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, OpenAI stated, "For a fuller experience with access to more features like search, higher limits, and greater personalization, existing users should continue using ChatGPT directly through their accounts."

The WhatsApp chatbot for ChatGPT currently supports only text-based conversations, with no option to add it to group chats. However, OpenAI plans to introduce more features soon, including ChatGPT Search, image-based chats, and memory logs for conversations, accessible through a ChatGPT account. Additionally, OpenAI noted that users are currently limited to 15 minutes of call time per month.

OpenAI mentioned that it may adjust the usage limits depending on system capacity. Users will receive notifications as they near their daily or monthly limits. "We notify you as you approach the limit and inform you once the limit is reached," OpenAI explained.

For the unversed, ChatGPT on WhatsApp has a knowledge cutoff as of October 2023, meaning it can't provide information on events or updates beyond that point.

Despite some feature limitations, this new integration makes ChatGPT more accessible to a broader audience and offers WhatsApp users an alternative to Meta AI.

OpenAI has officially rolled out ChatGPT Search for all users globally for free. The ChatGPT Search offers quick and up-to-date answers along with links to relevant web sources, a task that is usually managed by search engines.
