New Patriots: Get to know rookie right guard Layden Robinson

FOXBORO -- Patriots right guard Layden Robinson leads his rookie class with six starts through the first half of the 2024 season.

LR: My first football memory that comes to mind is just being in little league out there having fun with my friends. At that time I'm playing behind the stands or in the grass, just having fun out there. My mom telling me sit down somewhere before the game, or she gonna whoop me, stuff like that. Because that's where you create those memories for the love of the game. Spending that every Friday or every Saturday out there, and eating good food and playing the game that you love.

BH: What was your first position in little league?

LR: My first position was, I believe, was actually running back. But then I got big. When I went to Jasper (Texas) and my grandparents house, they fed me a lot, and I ate a lot, and I got big, and I came back, and I was strictly like a defensive lineman, offensive lineman after that.

BH: Top high school football memory?

LR: Going to the state championship my junior year. That was just a great memory for me and a great year in general. Because of me transferring to Manvel (Texas) High School, I learned what it was actually like to have a coaching staff that really care about you and want to see you succeed. And just the culture that they had there, it helped me and prepared me for life, and I'm truly grateful forever for that school, and I'm just going there to that state championship for my guys. I mean, that was some of the closest bonds I ever had. And when those guys left, we damn near cried. So it was like that was the memory that I forever remember.

BH: Top college football memory?

LR: My first time getting in, when we played South Carolina, my (redshirt freshman) year at right guard. Something happened, and then I got a chance to get in and play. I made a big impact. I felt like that was like God telling me that I belonged. Because I was asking for a sign that weekend. That was him showing me that I belonged and I could play at the SEC level. So that was just great thing for me.

BH: What made Texas A&M so special?

LR: It was where I found myself at. I went through a lot of ups and downs at that place, but I'm truly grateful for the opportunity that I was had there, because Coach (Jimbo) Fisher he took a chance on me. The best part about it was, I earned it to be there. I got the offer from a camp, so I earned the right to be there, and just going there and just going through scout team, winning Scout Team of the Year for a freshman, and just working my way through the ranks. I could say there, that's where I learned how to grind. I learned how to work through adversity and everything. Nothing was given, and that's football right there. So that's what I loved about that. I have nothing but great times from that place, but also remember the bad times too and how it helped mold me as a person.

BH: What would you be doing if you weren't a football player?

LR: I really don't know. I don't know what I'd be doing if I wasn't a football player. This is my everything right now. I did like the Kobe Bryant thing, put all the eggs in one basket. They could get some more eggs later. So yeah, I really don't know to be honest.

BH: Who was your favorite athlete growing up?

LR: My favorite athlete was (Jets) Tyron Smith for tackle, and my favorite offensive lineman all time was Larry Allen for guard. That's who I looked up to, especially in high school when I got switched to guard, because I used to watch a lot of Tyron Smith film when I was a tackle, but then I got switched to guard, and I said, 'well, I need somebody to model my game after.' And I found (ex-Cowboys guard) Larry Allen. I've been watching Larry Allen ever since. Just his physical play attracted me, and and that's what I try to model my game after every day.

BH: Did you get to talk to Tyron at all after the Jets games?

LR: I did. At one point, I caught him after the game when they came here because I missed him the first time because he went off the field fast. But I caught him, and I got to talk to him, just chop it up a little bit. So, that was a great opportunity.

BH: What's your favorite movie?

LR: I like movie series. One of my favorite movie series is "Rocky." Another one is "John Wick." That's one of my favorite movie series. I love "Batman," the one that starts with "Batman Begins." That's the best Batman and the best Joker. I love "Spider-man," Tobey Maguire Spider-man to be exact. He's the GOAT. And I love "Waterboy." That's one of my favorite comedy football movies. And my serious football movie, I'd say it has to be "Greater" and "The Express."

BH: Favorite musical artist?

LR: J. Cole is my favorite musical artist of all time.

BH: Who have you been closest with on the team so far?

LR: I get help from all the guys. Me and Caedan (Wallace) when we came in, that's my dawg because we came in and got drafted at the same time. They always made a joke and call us the Aidens. I could say I'm really close with him. All of us, I've been getting close with a lot of the guys here.

BH: Who's the funniest player on the team?

LR: I'd say Kendrick (Bourne). KB is really funny, especially the energy that he has. He's a really funny guy.

BH: What's your favorite thing about the New England region?

LR: I like painting from time to time, and cooking, obviously.
