Maddie Merrick had two goals and an assist, all in the first half, to propel ninth-seeded New Providence to a 3-1 victory over eighth-seeded Brearley in the second round of the Union County Tournament in Kennilworth.

Merrick opened the scoring with a penalty kick within the first five minutes, then assisted on Brooke Macauley's goal for New Providence (8-6-1), which led 3-0 at halftime. Sofia Zamora made 10 saves.

New Providence plays top-seeded Westfield, No. 15 in the NJ.com Top 20, in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Georgia Sode scored the lone goal for Brearley (8-3) and Jessica Martin made nine saves.
