Buffalo man who violated order of protection gets 14-year sentence for fatal attack

A man who violated an order of protection and fatally beat and kicked his father-in-law has been sentenced to 14 years in prison, acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced.

Mohammed Mia, 42, of Buffalo, also was ordered by State Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Haendiges to receive five years of post-release supervision.

Prosecutors said the incident occurred Oct. 24, 2021, when Mia ignored a protection order and went to the home of his estranged wife in Buffalo.

According to prosecutors, Mia slapped, punched and choked his wife, then attacked her father, Mohammed Hossain, 47, when he and her mother attempted to stop him.

Mia threw Hossain to the floor, prosecutors said, punched and kicked him repeatedly, then fled in his vehicle while the victims called 911. He was arrested later that day when he went to the E-District police station to report that he had been attacked by his wife and her parents.

Hossain was taken to Erie County Medical Center with severe head injuries. He died three days later. Mia's wife and her mother suffered cuts, bruises and broken teeth.

Mia pleaded guilty May 6 to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter with consent of the victim's family, Keane said. An order of protection was issued on their behalf through November 2040.
