Dozens repel down the side of the Slugger Museum for a good cause

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Dozens of people went over the edge of the Louisville Slugger Museum in support of a good cause.

Over the Edge is an annual event held by Critically Loved, a non-profit that supports children and families of chronically ill children, assisting them in navigating hospital stays, bill payment, and schooling issues as well as providing educational, recreational, and spiritual support to foster community.

And for the first time, Camp Quality Kentuckiana participated with them. They help support children with cancer and their families through various programs and activities fostering resilience and community.

People who participated in the event repelled down the side of the Slugger Museum and raised money for one or both organizations.

It's something that's close to Eliza Downs's heart.

Downs was diagnosed with a neuroblastoma when she was four months old. She went into remission when she was one and a half years old. While she doesn't remember her treatment it's something that's apart of her. She's attended Camp Quality where she got to bond with others who have similar stories. Now she's helping give back.

"Everyone has a story, everyone has a port scar, everyone has a tumor scar from where they got their main tumor resected," Downs said.

Downs said when she attended her first Camp Quality event she felt like she could relate to others. Years later, she comes back as a counselor to help others going through what she did.

"I didn't know a lot of people who had cancer at all, especially childhood cancer," Downs said. "Being able to go and meet one of my really good friends, Destiny; we were similar ages when we had our cancers, our scars are in the same spot. It was really special to connect in that way,"

Saturday's daredevil event brought out a sense of symbolism.

"People are doing something where they have to show a little bravery and be courageous while they go through it," Eddie Bobbitt, Executive Director Camp Quality Kentuckiana said. "That's what our organizations do, we support our families through times where we have to be there for them as they overcome obstacles,"
