ModeAudio's first plugin Airspace stays true to their ambient DNA: Review

ModeAudio launched its first plugin a few months back offering an interesting take on convolution reverb and delay effects.

ModeAudio, after having a successful run in the sample pack market, has released its first plugin. The company specializes in ethereal ambient & cinematic sounds, and this new plugin falls right into their wheelhouse. Airspace combines stereo delay and reverb effects into one easy-to-use, lightweight plugin. When creating textures and pads, reverb and delay are often cranked up to create lush atmospheres. While the originality of a sound typically gets lost when applying convolution reverb, Airspace beautifully preserves the character of the sound while transforming it. Lets take a look at the user interface and features of the plugin.

The user interface is straightforward in its layout, yet creative enough in its color scheme to where it isn't a bore to look at. Broken down into 3 core sections; the plugin features a Colour, Delay, and Space section. In addition, the Delay Mod parameters are nested at the very bottom of the interface.

Within the color section, you get all the basic parameters you would expect from a convolution reverb including Predelay, IR Size, and Mix. You can also control the reverb with the provided attack, hold, and release parameters. Along with these parameters, there's a 4-band EQ as well that is quite handy in fine-tuning the wet signal. You can select from a library of over 450 impulse responses organized into 11 folders. You'll find some really unique impulse responses from Amplifiers to Kitchen sounds, Springs & Plates, and a whole lot more. It does take a bit of time to familiarize with the tonal characteristics of these IRs but it becomes really effective in the sound design process.

The delay section is a simple delay with all the essential parameters. What particularly got us excited was the Delay Mod section that allows you to modulate the timing, pitch, and panning of the wet signal. The magic lies in the Delay Mod section - a few tweaks can transform familiar sounds into something completely unexpected.

Space section is basically identical to the colour section. ModeAudio provided 2 of these to allow for multiple Impulse responses to be used to allow for a more interesting sound design. The plugin shines when applied to instruments such as guitars, field recordings, foleys etc.

For those who may not know if this would be a good solution for their production workflow, ModeAudio offers a free 15-day trial. The retail price for Airspace comes in at just $75.56. At the time of this review, ModeAudio has listed the plugin on sale at $62.83
