Packers Add a Receiver to the Practice Squad

Packers Add a Receiver to the Practice Squad

Call it a soap opera.

As the roster churns.

Ok, maybe that's not the best name for a soap opera, but it's appropriate for what's happening at the bottom of the Green Bay Packers' roster.

Injuries and tryouts often lead to the bottom of the roster looking drastically different than it did when the team initially sets its roster.

According to Packer Report's Easton Butler, the Packers have done more to add to their roster.

Butler reports the Packers have signed former Los Angeles Chargers' receiver Cornelius Johnson to the practice squad.

Johnson takes the spot that was voided by Chris Brooks, who was signed to the active roster following Marshawn Lloyd's placement on injured reserve.

Johnson was a 7th round pick for the Chargers after starring at Michigan as a former four-star recruit.

Johnson played second-fiddle in college to both the run game and Roman Wilson.

Johnson finished his college career with 138 catches, 2,038 yards, and 14 touchdowns.

The best game of his career came in 2022 against Ohio State.

Johnson had two touchdowns in that game that spanned more than 60 yards. Johnson's big day helped lead the Wolverines to their first win in Columbus since Drew Henson was Michigan's quarterback.

"Coming into that play. It was third-and-9, I think I was subbing in from the sideline -- maybe I was already in the game, but I just remember being in the huddle. And I was just trying to embrace it, man." Johnson told Isaiah Hole of The Wolverines Wire.

"Everyone was screaming, yelling at us, millions of people it felt like. J.J. gave me my route, we looked at each other, I knew he was coming to me. And then we were able to connect on that sideline and then just turn up from there. And it was a great feeling coming to the sideline. I mean, we really needed that for our team. And that was a great game. We had to keep on battling the whole time."

Johnson will now be in a battle to stay on the practice squad in a competitive receiver room.

The Packers kept six receivers on their 53-man roster to start the season. All of them have been active this season.

The situation in the receiver room is fluid. Once Jordan Love returns from his knee injury, they may keep Malik Heath as a healthy scratch.

As of now, there's not a real path to the roster, but that could change in a blink.

If it does change, Johnson can contribute on special teams, where he played in college including blocking a punt in the 2021 Big Ten Championship game against Iowa.

He was also described by Lance Zierlein as, "A chippy run blocker."

The Packers' receiver room lives by the mantra, "No block, no rock."

That gives Johnson a potential leg up in what should continue to be a hotly-contested receiver room.
