Albemarle shut out at Anson County - The Stanly News & Press

Jazear Griffin ran all over Albemarle on Friday night as Anson pitched a shutout for a 41-0 win.

Griffin, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound senior, had 173 yards rushing with a pair of touchdowns on 15 carries. It was his third straight game of at least 115 yards for the 3A Bearcats.

Anson (2-2) was coming off a big win over North Rowan 44-22.

"It was an old fashioned butt whooping," Bulldog Head Coach Richard Davis said. The Anson alum told his troops after the game, "We will get better."

Anson quarterback Dock Hyatt added more than 100 yards in the air with a touchdown. Jayden Little and Kendrick Maye also had scores. Maye had 133 yards with two TDs.

Albemarle (1-3) starts a handful of freshmen at key positions like center and middle linebacker and has struggled against older, larger and more physical teams.

To its credit, the Bulldogs remain disciplined, committing few penalties since week 1. Center Chris Hernandez has had to grow up fast this season and is one of 11 freshmen who have been on the roster.

The 1A Bulldogs were able to field its first junior varsity team this fall on Thursday when it hosted Anson. The jayvees performed relatively respectable, but lost 0-26.

Albemarle was held under 100 yards on the ground and managed just one pass completion after a solid performance in a road win last week.

Quarterback Dre Davis had some deep punts to help out his defense, but Anson dominated the line of scrimmage.

Sophomore Shoddy Pergee had an interception for the Bulldogs near the goal line to hold on to just a 20-0 deficit to the half.

The clock kept running in the fourth quarter and host Anson honored its fallen warriors with players taking on the names of late heroes for the game.

Albemarle will host Southwestern Randolph next week. Southwestern defeated McMichael 43-21 in Week 4.
