ASHBURN, Va. (7News) -- Commanders sophomore cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. is expected to have surgery on a torn UCL in his right thumb, according to several reports.

The former first-round pick injured his thumb during the Commanders' season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Forbes made 4 tackles in that game.

Forbes, who was on the field for practice on Thursday hours before the news broke, is expected to be out for several weeks.

After a forgettable rookie season, Forbes was poised to have a 'prove it' year, as one of the few holdovers from the Ron Rivera regime. Forbes was the 16th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Washington hosts the New York Giants on Sunday at Northwest Field.
