Penn State tight end Tyler Warren (44) runs after an catch during the first half against USC on Oct. 12.
Penn State will put its unbeaten record on the line against Wisconsin on Saturday night in Madison.
James Franklin's Nittany Lions (6-0, 3-0), off on Saturday, last played on Oct. 12 when they edged USC, 33-30, in overtime at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Wisconsin (5-2, 3-1) has been on a roll of late, winning its past three Big Ten games by a combined score of 117-16. Luke Fickell's Badgers beat Northwestern, 23-3, in Evanston on Saturday. Wisconsin lost at USC 38-21 on Sept. 28.
Here are some early storylines:
Tyler Warren's follow-up act. Penn State's veteran tight end, recently named a first-team Associated Press midseason All-American, shredded USC's defense for 224 receiving yards and a touchdown. Warren leads the Lions in catches (40), yards (513) and receiving scores (4). He also can impact the game as a runner, thrower and blocker. Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki will continue to feature him. The Badgers' defense is ranked No. 7 in FBS in fewest passing yards allowed per game (155.9).
Finishing in the red zone. If you count the Lions' overtime possession against USC, Penn State had six red-zone trips vs. the Trojans. The Lions had to settle for field goals on four of them, as Ryan Barker made kicks of 34, 33, 20 and 36 yards. PSU must convert more of those opportunities into touchdowns.
Badgers battering teams with run game. Wisconsin hammered Northwestern with a rushing attack that generated 199 yards and two touchdowns. Tawee Walker, who leads the Badgers in rushing with 565, carried 23 times for 126 yards against the Wildcats. Walker has nine rushing touchdowns. Penn State is allowing an average of just 95 rushing yards per game, but USC feature back Woody Marks ran for 111 yards on 20 carries vs. the Lions.
Penn State's hunt for big plays. The Lions offense has generated 30 plays of 20 or more yards. Wisconsin, which held Northwestern to 209 total yards, has not allowed a play of more than 50 yards this season. Penn State has produced four plays of 50 or more yards, all of them passes.
