Gowanus' transformation from an industrial area to an alluring residential area composed of converted warehouse lofts, New York-styled rowhomes, trendy art galleries and restaurants has made it a pick for families looking to relocate.

Those amenities and others led to TravelMag placing Gowanus among the top 16 up-and-coming neighborhoods in the country.

Here's why.

Gowanus generally runs east from 4th Avenue to Bond Street and from Butler Street to the Gowanus Expressway.

TravelMag termed Gowanus as an "emerging" neighborhood on its up-and-coming neighborhoods list.

In doing so, TravelMag praised the transformation of the Gowanus Canal from a polluted waterway to an artistic hub as but one of Gowanus' amenities.

"While Gowanus doesn't come to mind when one imagines quintessential Brooklyn, the neighborhood holds its own in terms of character and entertainment," read TravelMag's description of Gowanus. "The Black Mountain Wine House, staged in a rustic cabin, features an impressive lineup of wines by the glass; Threes Brewing offers a Brooklyn brewery experience; and The Bell House is a comedy and music venue set in a 1920s warehouse."

If you want to rent an apartment or buy home in Gowanus, be prepared to pay nearly double than what you would to live elsewhere in Brooklyn.

According to Zumper, the average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Gowanus is $4,200, while the overall average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn is $2,738.

The gap is similar for homeownership in Gowanus.

While homes are being sold throughout Brooklyn for a little under $1 million, Zillow notes that homes in Gowanus are being sold for more than $1.1 million.
