'Bring happiness and joy,' Texans, Great Wolf Lodge make holiday wishes come true for Texas Children's Hospital kids

WEBSTER - Blake Fisher understood his assignment: create a fun, unforgettable experience for patients from Texas Children's Hospital.

And the Texans' rookie offensive tackle tackled the moment with enthusiasm and understanding along with teammates Danielle Hunter and Kamari Lassiter as they made holiday wishes come true during a day of play at Adventure Park at Great Wolf Lodge Texas Gulf Coast.

Between mini-golf, bowling and virtual reality and arcade games, there were a lot of smiles on the faces of a group of kids undergoing treatment or recently released from Texas Children's Hospital, which received a $15,000 donation to support the organization during the holiday season.

A second-round draft pick from Notre Dame, Fisher has a special connection to children dealing with adversity. His sister, Breonna, was a special-needs kid who passed away at the age of 10 after battling traumatic brain damage caused by a virus she was stricken with as a baby. Fisher has a large tattoo honoring Breonna on his right arm, and describes her as his motivational force.

"It hits home a lot," Fisher told KPRC 2. "Some people don't really understand how to interact with kids and stuff like this, but, in my eyes, they're the same. This is just something they're born with that they can't control. So, you just treat them like everybody else. You see the smiles on their faces, how much they're having fun. Doing the normal things. This is normal to them, and normal to me. Some people might look at it differently, just being here with them is great.

"I've never been here before. I was like, 'Wow.' I've never seen anything like this in my life. I guess it's true, everything is bigger in Texas. The kids are having a lot of fun. I'm having a lot of fun. I feel like I'm a big kid right now."

Fisher, Lassiter and Hunter hit some golf shots and helped their new friends navigate the course.

"It's amazing," Lassiter said. "Just to be able to use our platform to give back to the people who don't have as good a situation as we do, it means the world. That's the beauty of it, just putting a smile on someone else's face. The world is bigger than ourselves."

A four-time Pro Bowl defensive end who grew up in Katy and excelled in football and track at Morton Ranch High School, Hunter enjoyed meeting the kids and playing some games. It was a memorable experience.

"It's a good feeling being able to come out here and have the kids be happy and support them," Hunter said. "It's a blessing for me to see that. It feels great just being able to go out there and make their day. There's a lot of people out there that wish to meet us.

"And, you know, we're human. We can only be in one place at a time and just be able to go out there, meet some of our fans who have supported us for our whole careers, it means a lot to be able to bring happiness and joy."
