TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) -- The deadline to file a claim in a class action lawsuit against Hillsborough County related to a 2019-2021 sales surtax is December 31.
This comes after a Florida court found the 1% surtax was unconstitutional.
The surtax applied to many transactions such as retail purchases, hotel stays, event tickets and commercial rent payments.
Any person or business looking to file a claim as part of the settlement can do so on the settlement's website before December 31.
Class members have two options to claim the refund: Provide receipts or other proof of taxable expenditures to receive a refund equal to the amount of their surtax payments; or if they lived in Hillsborough County anytime between January 1, 2019, and March 15, 2021, and either cannot or do not want to provide proof of taxable purchases, claim a standard award of up to $100, depending on the length of residency during that time.
